Manuscripts of the Human Condition

Artist's Statement by Jeanne Poulet

I am totally committed to Printmaking, Etching/Engraving.  My work is about the Human Spirit.  In my art images, I record an emotional conceptual image of good and evil of the human spirit.  My life’s work is committed to understanding the process that makes one person full of love, respect, and giving, and others violent and harmful bastions of hate.

I am a survivor. work-a-holic, hyper-active, insomniac, ambidextrous artist.  I am dyslexic, which makes me a master printmaker. Everything is upside down! I do not copy from photographic references, because I already see the image. I do not project slides or trace resource material for any of my works.

I do my work in series. I add prose/poetry to my invented images with self-critiques written about each of the invented conceptual images.  I have recently reinstated the dimension of portrait painting with a life model, but have to draw and/or paint the hands, feet etc. by looking in a mirror!

I consider the camera as a great tool for recording and documentation.  I purchased my first Zeiss in 1950, and became a committed photographer in the 1970’s.  I have a large collection of my own works, other photographer’s works, and Poulet family photographs from the 19th Century.

Children’s “ArtBookWorks” and Illustrations, and Language Art Books, are part of my world since 1988, when my first of four grandchildren, Pierce, was born.  Landscapes were added in 1998 by a commission from the Sherry Washington Gallery. Flowers were invented with the help of my second grand child, Sydnee.  Two other grandchildren, Danya and Tarek are budding painters. I have a son, Peter Architect Builder and a daughter, Jacqueline who is a Comedienne and Mother of four.

I was born in Montreal, Canada in 1933, of mixed races, speaking French, German, and Dutch. My first nine years were filled with cultural upheavals; opera, classical music, literature, unexpected poverty and injustices.  I was home schooled until nine, did not read English until twelve, memorized Shakespeare by seventeen, and have kept a journal since 1953.
